Camping in Minnesota and Wisconsin in the summer is a great and very popular activity. Sitting by a warm campfire with family and friends is good for the soul. However, when the leaves start to fall and the temperatures drop, most people put their camping gear away. Even though the scenery and stars are incredible and there are no bugs, the thought of shivering through a miserably cold night doesn't sound enjoyable. Believe me. It's not. There is a better way.
Let me introduce you to the hot tent. A hot tent (aka wall tent) is a canvas tent with an internal wood burning stove. These tents are ideal for cold weather and winter camping for the following reasons:
They truly are amazing and will allow you to camp in the coldest of days in comfort and style. They are perfect for family camping, hunting, or as a warming house for a cold day event.
In order to hot tent there are a few items you'll most likely need/want:
You may be asking yourself if hot tenting is so great, why don't more people do it. The two main reasons are lack of knowledge and cost. Most people I talk to have no idea that you can get a tent with a wood burning stove and thus don't consider it. Those that are familiar with hot tenting are dissuaded by the initial cost of the tent, stove, and cold weather sleeping bags which can cost $1500-$3000. For many, spending this amount on something you use infrequently halts them in their tracks.
Renting a hot tent and gear is a great way try out cold weather or winter camping to determine if it's for you. It's also perfect for those that will only do it occasionally and don't want to invest in and store the gear. You may have to look around to find an outfitter with a tent that meets your needs as there are not many south of Lake Superior.
If you're local, DIRO Outdoors has a hot tent, bunkable cots, and all you need for rent to give it a try. We also have packages where we'll setup everything for you at a local park, get the stove pumping out heat, and take it down when you're done. It doesn't get easier than that! Call 651-233-6059 or visit https://dirooutdoors.com/pages/rental-gear to learn more.
Winter camping is a great experience everyone should try. The early nights provide ample time to sit by the bonfire and watch the stars, the landscapes are incredible, and the peace and quiet from being away from people lets the stress melt away. Pair it with a hot tent where you can stay warm and dry even in the coldest of nights and it creates memories that will last a lifetime.

There’s a third reason why people don’t hot tent. If you do a search for tents, virtually 100% of the results focus on weight. If you check out the “top ten” lists, you’ll find that none of them agree on the ten best tents but every offering on every such list is for the lightest tents.
People are obsessed with weight. That’s a valid reason if you’re backpacking, since few people want to pull a cargo truck (or are even aware they exist).
Personally, I want a hot tent for durability as much as I want it for warmth. I want something that will withstand the abuses that the outdoors subjects it to. I lived in a tipi that I sewed myself back in the ‘70s and that’s been my favorite design ever since.
Your blog is amazing thanks for sharing. I purchased winter tent for traveling, it was really awesome thanku.
Hello diro outdoor people :)
I just saw your tent page and just really wanna say, its the most beautiful craft Ive seen on canoes and I really appreciate your work.
I just moved to Canada (ontario) from Germany a week ago, Im a very outdoorsy girl, which includes why I contact you. I have 2 youtube channels, one of them has 160.000 followers and about 29 Million Clicks. I basically create outdoor content there, including bushcraft and survival.
Now why I reach out to you is, I wanna show my followers and future viewers, how stunning this land is, while my journey Id love to set up basic campsites with a tent and explore from there. Its gonna be a series that’ll attract lots of more viewers, called A GIRL IN THE WILD – Overnight in … in a canvas tent … Ive already made one series with that name and it got 12 million views. That said, I wanted to reach out and see how y’all think about providing a tent, and me making a review about it (of course positiv), and then basically product placements in every video that I upload.
I usually don’t do reviews on my channel or many product placements because I really just wanted it to be about nature and thriving there but, a canvas tent, is a huge dream of mine and, I would be honoured to present your company and what you stand for and expose your craft to a huge audience.
here an example of a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9OG-aY0xaM&t=3s (I usually talk more (nonsense :) but not in that one
let me know how you feel about collaborating,
deep appreciation for you work
all the best,
I am about to go full-time in a 6M Emperor tent. Very excited!
